The South Shore Kennel Club (SSKC) presently has 20 members. The club’s area of operation is the South Shore of Nova
Scotia, with most members living in Lunenburg County.
The SSKC’s Constitution states the following:
|
The objectives of the club shall be to advance the best interest of the dog and the dog fancier in all matters; to encourage and
support Dog Shows and Obedience Trials for competition and public interest; to emphasize to the public the importance and
merit of pure breeding and of purebred registered dogs; to foster and maintain among ourselves a warm friendship and high
degree of sportsmanship; to promote the interest and uphold the bylaws of the Canadian Kennel Club; to ensure that the SSKC
will not be conducted or operated for profit, and any operating surplus or remainder of residue from donations, dues, etc., to the
club shall not be of any benefit to any member or individual.

Members of the SSKC, along with their dogs, participate whenever possible in various public relation events such as visitations
to local youth groups, senior citizens’ homes, and hospitals. The club also supports the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals) and SHAID (Shelter for Helpless Animals in Distress).
Several club members are heavily involved in both Agility and Flyball activities and, with their trained dogs, have participated in
the Superdogs Shows in Canada and the United States.
Over the years, the members of the SSKC have eagerly and seriously participated in just about every discipline of the dog world.
With much dedication, self-training, patience, and determination, they have achieved many high awards and titles as demonstrated
by the following examples.
Charles Larouche has a love of Obedience and Field Trials. He trained and led five Beagles to their O.T. CH. titles, with each one
earning a High In Trial (and most with multiple HITs). To the best of his knowledge, he was the first in Canada to get such a title
on a Beagle. It was rare to see a Beagle in the obedience ring at that time. Three of the Larouche Labrador Retrievers also finished
with O.T. CH. titles. Charles attained American Open Field Trial Championships as well as Canadian Amateur and Open Field Trial
Championships with his Labrador Retrievers. His dog Ottello was the first from Atlantic Canada to achieve all three titles. One of his
Labrador Retrievers decided to try something different and “finished” her championship in the Conformation Ring.
Donna Fulton has achieved the ultimate with her Miniature Poodle, Spencer, who proudly carries the CDX, WC, and SAT CH. titles
after his name. He has the distinction of being the second Miniature Poodle in Canada to have earned a CKC WC title. In 2002
Spencer was ranked the number two Miniature Poodle in Agility.
Jay Kincaid’s interest lies in Obedience and Working events, and she admits to many enjoyable and successful moments in these
disciplines with her German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers. Hunt Tests being her favourite event, her dog Harry’s Master Hunting
Retriever title with NAHRA makes for her proudest moment.
Several years ago, a former member trained his Great Dane (bred by a fellow club member) to be a jumping dog, and for a period of
time, she held the record for the highest jumping dog in Canada. This was a fantastic feat, since Great Danes are not known to be a
jumping breed. At a Superdogs Show at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, she competed with the famous show jumping horse, Big Ben.
Three members, Nancy Haughn, Jennifer Stockman, and Jay Kincaid, along with their dogs, have successfully completed the St. John
Ambulance Therapy Dog Program. Each week they visit local hospitals and nursing homes where they have become immensely
popular with the residents.
Throughout their 33-year membership with the club, Ray and Gloria Fielding have bred Great Danes and Toy and Miniature Poodles under
the "Cleverfield" prefix. Their dogs have achieved Canadian championships as well as one American championship, group placements, and Best Puppy In Show wins. Alex, a Standard
Poodle, is their latest Champion and Best In Show winner. Cleverfield Great Danes and Poodles have excelled in other disciplines as well,
including Obedience and Agility activities.
SSKC members participate in many of the local Championship and Obedience events and Specialty Shows. They eagerly compete
with the best, taking great pride in winning titles on their “best friends.”
